wash your car

i have recently discovered that my father is not the only father who thinks that his daughter’s car must be spotless. at all times. this is comforting to hear, yet i still think my dad has others beat. seriously. does your dad wash his truck to go to town in the pouring rain? (keep in mind that my parents live in the county and must drive down a few miles of gravel roads before they even reach pavement) see? i told you. my dad’s a perfectionist. my sister and i have come to realize that we have inherited this quality… just maybe not as extreme when it comes to our cars.
a few years back i thought i might even be disowned for the state of my car. you see it had rained for a few days straight and my car was covered in a think layer of mud and sludge. one evening, after the rain had stopped, but before my car had been rid of it’s filthiness, we attended a baseball game with some friends. i remember my dad’s request that i wash my car before leaving for the city. i also remember responding that i didn’t have time as i was supposed to meet a friend and spend the day shopping before we attended the game. (seriously. shopping or washing you car? not a hard decision) so upon arriving at the game my car was still covered in the mud and sludge. between the innings, the generous people of the winnipeg goldeye’s decided that they needed to award me with the privilege of having the dirtiest car in the parking lot. as they announced my license plate number for everyone to hear i remember slinking down in my seat as my family and friends turned and laugh, my dad giving me the “i told you to wash you car” look. oh the shame!
to this day, i try to keep my car clean, more for my dad’s sake than my own. i start to feel guilt when i realize that half the shoes i own are scattered across the back seat. i feel even guiltier if i don’t chammy my car after washing it. sometimes i even hear my dad’s voice in the back of my head… “wash you car” he’d yell from the shop as i’d pull up to the house. it all kinda makes me laugh.
dad, just so you know… my car is clean, inside and out… all is well in the world
