logic from the gilmore girls

a little background: richard gilmore has recently returned home from the hospital after having emergency bypass surgery, emily is felling overwhelmed as their accountant calls continuously asking for tax forms that she knows nothing about, lorelei comes to her rescue and the following conversation begins…

E: it’s like a canoe
L: what’s like a canoe?
E: life
L: okay?
E: you’re just paddling along in a canoe
L: mother have you ever been in a canoe?
E: lorelei!
L: well, i just can’t picture you in a canoe
E: your father and i have been paddling a canoe together for years, only now he’s dropped the paddle, he just dropped it, not only that, but now the canoe’s going in circles, without your father there, i’m paddling on my side, and the canoe is spinning in circles, and the harder i paddle the faster it spins, and it’s hard work, and i’m getting tired
L: dizzy i would think
E: you, are in a kayak, you know how to do all of this
L: how does that put me in a kayak?
E: kayaks have paddles with things on both ends, you steer it by yourself
L: mom you know how to do things by yourself, you are totally capable
E: but you, you provide for yourself, you’re not dependant on anyone, you’re independent
L: i am kayak, hear me roar!
